Mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Ellen Rayner - 1857. The linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with Ellen's name and the date of August 1857 above the last row.

The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, very slightly darker in places. The colours of the wool are good with some shades not quite as vibrant as when this piece was originally made. There is also the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Ellen first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is an area of damage to the linen on the lower right corner. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable.
