Description Description
Mid 19th century sampler by Ann Watt aged 11 - 1873. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with three rows of alphabet letters and numbers, each underlined with a different example of border pattern with a crown to the right of the third row which then has the following verse below with a tree to the right

To save what was lost from heaven he came
Come sinners and trust in Jesus' name
He offers you pardon, he bids you be free
If sin be your burden O come unto me

Ann's details and the date of A.D.1873 are contained within the lower section of the gauze with a rose basket, diamond and two floral motifs to either side and a crown flanked by a heart and flower below. There is a flower basket beneath the crown with a flower followed by a star to the left and right of its topmost bloom and a heart, carnation, floral motifs and a tree to either side of the basket itself.

The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with fraying and damage to the edges plus a few scattered stains which appear to be the result of water damage. The colours of the wool have mellowed from their original vibrancy but the effect is still a pleasing one. There is also minor bleeding to the stitch work of the verse and Ann's details.
I have pictures with darker backgrounds and lighter
