MID 19TH CENTURY ALPHABET Worked by an anonymous hand in wool on linen and dating to c.1850 or slightly earlier. The linen is stitched with numerous rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with a diamond, flower basket and bird to the right of the rows in the lower section, all underlined with a diamond border.

The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places and the colours of the wool are good with areas of stitch loss. The penultimate photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched.
